Short rib is the ideal toddler meat: when braised low and slow until fork tender, it barely requires teeth; it can take on any sort of flavor your child likes. But you’d be hard-pressed to find many short ribs for toddlers recipes out there that oblige your kid’s palate; instead, nearly everything on the interwebs is geared toward the adult and/or European palate. And, sure, you can totally serve a red wine-braised number to a toddler–I have, and it works–but let’s give him or her a piece of meat he/she can really crave, a beef dish you can return to again and again.
The solution, as it always is for us, is already in your pantry and/or fridge: fruit, honey, soy--force multipliers for making foods taste sweet and savory. The flavor profile leans Korean; the cooking method will remind you of northern Italian cuisine. The results: all good–for everyone.

Ingredients Overview
Boneless Short Ribs: Trimming the fat cap and cutting the meat into uniform 2-inch chunks ensures even cooking. Boneless cuts render into tender, easy-to-chew bites perfect for toddlers and young kids.
Asian Pear & Fuji Apple: The secret to a silky, glossy braising sauce. Blending Asian pear with a sweet Fuji (or Honeycrisp) apple introduces natural pectin and enzymes that tenderize the beef while creating a smooth glaze that clings to every bite.
Low-Sodium Soy Sauce & Fish Sauce: Low-sodium soy sauce keeps the salt level balanced for young palates, while a splash of fish sauce adds deep umami richness without making the dish taste fishy.
Unseasoned Rice Vinegar & Honey: Replacing traditional mirin, this combination brings mild grain acidity and clean sweetness to balance the savory beef.
Aromatics & Veggies: Garlic, fresh ginger, yellow onions, green onions, and sweet carrots build classic depth and add colorful, soft veggies to the bowl.
Steps Summary
Purée the Sauce Base: Blend the Asian pear, Fuji apple, onion, garlic, and ginger with liquid seasonings into a smooth, thick purée.
Sear the Beef: Brown the boneless short rib chunks on all sides in a Dutch oven to lock in rich flavor.
Combine & Braise: Nestled the seared beef, carrots, and green onions with the fruit purée sauce and braise low and slow in the oven for 1.5 to 2 hours until fork-tender.
Reduce & Serve: Skim excess fat and boil the remaining braising liquid down on the stovetop for 5 to 8 minutes into a rich, glossy glaze to spoon over the beef.
These short ribs for toddlers are great over rice, too! (Especially for younger toddlers)
FAQ
Can I make these boneless short ribs for toddlers in a slow cooker or Instant Pot?
Yes! For a slow cooker, sear the beef first, then combine everything and cook on LOW for 6–7 hours. For an Instant Pot, sear using the Sauté function, seal, and pressure cook on High for 35 minutes, followed by a 15-minute natural release.
How do I make the meat easier for toddlers to chew?
Boneless short ribs shred effortlessly once fully braised. Simply use two forks to pull the beef into small, bite-sized strands and toss it directly with warm short-grain rice and a spoonful of glaze.
What if I can't find an Asian pear?
You can use two sweet red apples (like Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp) or substitute a Bosc pear. The fruit purée provides both natural sweetness and tenderness.
Can I make short ribs for toddlers ahead of time?
Galbi-jjim actually tastes better the next day! Braise the dish completely, let it cool, and store it in the fridge overnight. The excess fat will solidify on top for easy removal, and the flavors will deepen as it sits.
How do I freeze leftovers?
Store the cooked short ribs and sauce in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat.
What vegetables can I add to the braise?
Japanese sweet potatoes (Satsumaimo), Kabocha squash, or Yukon Gold potatoes make excellent additions. Slice them into thick 1-inch chunks and add them during the last 30–40 minutes of braising.

Ingredients
2lb boneless Short Ribs
1small Onion
1 Pear
1 Apple (use a sweet and crisp variety, such as Fuji or Honeycrisp)
6cloves Garlic
6coins Ginger
1/2 Sweet Potato
3 Green Onions
1/4cup Chicken Broth (beef stock works, too)
1/2cup Soy Sauce (low-sodium)
2tbsp Honey
1tbsp Sesame Oil
3tbsp Rice Vinegar
1tbsp Fish Sauce
12 Baby Carrots
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 325.
2
Pat dry short ribs, then cut into roughly two-inch chunks. Season with salt and set aside.
3
Set up the vegetables: peel the pear, apple, onion, sweet potato, garlic, and ginger; remove the core and seeds of the pear and apple. Cut the pear, apple, and onion into roughly 4-5 pieces; slice the ginger into coins of roughly ¼” each; and smash the garlic flat. For the sweet potato, chop into cubes or slices. Cut the green onions in pieces roughly two inches in length each.
4
Add the soy sauce, broth, rice vinegar, sesame oil, honey, and fish sauce to a food processor or blender; toss in the pear, apple, onion, garlic, and ginger on top of the liquids. Blend until a smooth and thick puree forms, roughly 30 seconds.
5
Heat one tablespoon of neutral high-heat-friendly cooking oil in a Dutch oven or large pot over Medium High Heat. Once the pot is hot, add in enough short rib pieces to fill–but not overcrowd–the bottom of the pot, then cook until deeply browned on bottom, roughly 2-3 minutes; flip and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes. Remove beef pieces from heat and repeat for any remaining uncooked short rib pieces.
6
When all short rib pieces have been seared, return the seared beef–and any accumulated plate juices–back into the Dutch oven, along with the carrots and green onion pieces. Pour the pear-apple-onion puree over the top and bring the liquid to a boil.
7
Once the contents of the pot are simmering, cover tightly with a lid and transfer to your oven. Cook for 90 minutes.
8
Add sweet potato pieces into the pot and continue cooking until beef tears or shreds easily with a fork, roughly 20-30 minutes.
9
Remove beef and vegetables from the pot and transfer to a plate. Return pot to a stovetop, remove lid, and heat over Medium High heat until remaining liquid in pot has reduced and thickened, roughly five minutes. Pour pot sauce over short ribs and vegetables.
Serve
10
Braised short ribs work great over soft carbs, such as polenta or spaetzle; we recommend adding a pop of color and variation–green herbs, sesame seeds–just to break up the brown and orange. For younger and/or pickier eaters, we endorse pre-shredding the meat, then serving over rice.
Adapt
11
For the cheese fanatics, follow the recipe as written, then add sauced short ribs and vegetables to an oven-safe bowl or pan; top with shredded mozzarella (or neutral and melt-friendly cheese) and place directly under a broiler for a minute or two until the cheese melts and browns.
