“Wet” is not typically a positive description of a food or dish, even one designed for kids or toddlers–except when we’re talking wings, lemon pepper wings in particular. This not-spicy variation on a traditional buffalo wing skews bright and zesty rather than hot and tangy, which makes it a perfect gateway for small children, or a nice change-up from the classic wing flavor.

How did we make lemon pepper wings for kids work for, you know, kids? We upped the lemon and diminished the black pepper quantity by just enough so it tastes rather than tickles; we use ranch dressing as the sauce base to give the wings a creamy and, yes, “wet” texture both easy and fun to eat. Cooked in an air fryer, which makes them crispy on the outside while moist in the inside, you’ll be ready to wing it with your kiddo in under 30 minutes.

(Pro tip: while the recipe photo shows full-sized wings, we highly recommend using just drummies the first few times you serve to your child.)

Ingredients Overview

  • Chicken Wings or Drummettes: 2 lbs of protein; using drummettes (drummies) is highly recommended for younger children as they are easier to grip.
  • Baking Powder: The secret to achieving a “fried” crunch in the air fryer without the heavy oil.
  • Ranch Dressing: The base of our “wet” sauce, providing a familiar, creamy flavor profile that kids already love.
  • Miso Paste: Adds a subtle depth of savory “umami” that balances the citrus without adding heat.
  • Lemon: You will use both the zest for aromatics and the juice for that signature tang.
  • Black Pepper: Obviously. Less than typical lemon pepper wings–just enough to let your kid know it’s there.
  • Spices: A blend of garlic, onion, salt, and turmeric (for a golden hue) that keeps the flavor high but the spice-heat at zero.

Steps Summary

  1. Prep and Coat: Dry the chicken thoroughly and toss in the baking powder, salt, and garlic mixture to ensure a crispy exterior.
  2. Air Fry: Cook at 425°F for about 20 minutes, flipping halfway through until the skin is golden and crackling.
  3. Rest: Allow the wings to sit for 5-10 minutes; this keeps the juice inside and prevents the sauce from sliding off.
  4. Whisk the Sauce: Combine melted butter, ranch, miso, and dry spices, then finish with fresh lemon zest and juice.
  5. Toss and Serve: Coat the wings thoroughly in the sauce. For younger children, shred the meat from the bone and serve over a bed of rice.

FAQ

Are these wings spicy for toddlers? No, this recipe is designed to be “zesty” rather than spicy. We’ve reduced the black pepper and used a ranch base to keep the flavor mild and creamy.

Can I make these in a standard oven instead of an air fryer? Yes! Set your oven to 425°F and bake for 35-40 minutes on a wire rack, flipping once to ensure even crispiness.

Why do you recommend “drummies” for kids? Chicken drummettes act like a built-in handle, making them much easier for small hands to manage compared to the two-boned “flat” wing pieces.

What is the purpose of the miso paste? Miso adds a boost of savory flavor and saltiness that complements the lemon perfectly, helping the sauce taste “gourmet” even though it’s kid-friendly.

Is the baking powder necessary? Yes. The alkaline nature of baking powder breaks down the proteins in the skin, allowing it to crisp up beautifully in the air fryer without deep frying.

How should I serve these to a child under five? To avoid any choking hazards or difficulty with bones, we recommend pulling the meat off the bone and serving the saucy chicken bits over rice or mashed potatoes.

Instructions

Prep, Cook, and Assemble

  1. In a bowl or shallow container, add and mix together the baking powder, salt, and garlic.
  2. Wipe the chicken wings dry. Run each wing through the baking powder mixture, tossing to coat the skin in the mixture.
  3. Place wings into your air fryer skin side up. Set your machine to its Air Fryer setting and the temperature to 425; cook until the skin is visibly crispy, roughly 20 minutes. Flip the wings halfway through cooking. Let the wings rest for 5-10 minutes before saucing. (Note: to cook in an oven, set the oven to 425 and cook for 35-40 minutes, rotating or flipping once.)
  4. To make the sauce, melt the butter in a bowl or shallow container. Add in the ranch and miso paste and stir until mixed in with butter; mix in the pepper, garlic, onion, paprika, and turmeric.
  5. Zest the lemon skin into the sauce, followed by the juice of the lemon; mix again.
  6. Dunk the wings in the sauce and toss until fully coated. If desired, top wings with extra lemon zest, black pepper, and/or grated parmesan cheese.

Serve

  1. If serving drummies, just put one or two on your child’s plate; if using wings, it’s best to break off or shred some of the chicken from the bone for kids under five. Serve on top of rice if you do.

Adapt

  1. Recipe is easily adaptable with full chicken drumsticks–just add 10 to 15 minutes to the total cooking time. You can add a little mustard or even ketchup to the wing sauce to heighten its color and/or make more tangy. For a drier rub, melt 1.5 tablespoons of butter and add the spices and lemon zest; leave out the ranch and most of the lemon juice.
