Quick Hot Dog Dinner Idea: Kid-Friendly Brazilian Style

Quick Hot Dog Dinner Idea: Kid-Friendly Brazilian Style

Servings: 3 Total Time: 25 mins Difficulty: Beginner Sour Good for Picky Eaters High Protein Quick Meals

Full disclosure here: this Brazilian style hot dog (AKA, cachorro quente) may be the single dumbest recipe we’ve constructed here on New Dad’s Kitchen–and that’s saying something, considering. Tubesteaks are already absurd enough–thanks for the reminder, Lisa Simpson–but we’ve done gone crazy with the toppings on this quick hot dog dinner idea: more carbs, vegetables, all the condiments. Whyyyy, you ask? Up to you. Maybe you’re looking to cram a few more things into your child’s piehole in order to satisfactorily–or not-guiltily–call it dinner. Maybe you need to hide an ingredient (or six) to get your kid to eat it. Whatever your reason, the biggest surprise of all awaits: this hot dog dinner idea is inexplicably, almost indescribably delicious–and that’s coming from decidedly not-hotdog people. Just try not to think too hard about it.

(Note: the hot dog dinner idea assumes you have already-made mashed potatoes, fries, and/or green peas on hand. If you don’t, just make some instant versions, as we do!)

Ingredients Overview

  • Hot Dogs & Buns: The foundation of the dish. Scoring the hot dogs length-wise helps them absorb the rich tomato sauce and creates a perfect pocket for toppings.
  • The Tomato Sauce Base (Onion, Bell Pepper, Garlic, Tomato Sauce, Oregano): This is where the Brazilian flair comes in. Instead of just splashing cold ketchup on top, the hot dogs simmer directly in a seasoned veggie-and-tomato bath, infusing them with flavor and sneaking finely diced vegetables into every bite.
  • Mashed Potatoes: Acting as a delicious, savory “glue,” a layer of warm mashed potatoes spread along the bun holds all the loaded toppings securely in place so they don’t slide into your toddler’s lap.
  • Green Peas: A classic Brazilian hot dog topping that adds a pop of color, mild sweetness, and an extra serving of green veggies.
  • Cheez-Its or French Fries: The essential crunch factor. Adding a handful of crushed Cheez-Its or crispy fries on top mimics the traditional potato sticks used in Brazil, making the texture exciting for little eaters.
  • Grated Parmesan: A final savory, salty dust over the top to tie all the components together.

Steps Summary

  1. Prep and Score: Finely dice your onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Score the hot dogs length-wise to let the sauce penetrate the meat.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: Melt butter in a small pot over medium heat, then cook the onions and bell peppers until soft and translucent before adding the garlic.
  3. Simmer the Sauce: Stir in the tomato sauce, oregano, and a splash of water. Bring to a boil, then cover and lower the heat to simmer for 10 minutes to let the flavors marry.
  4. Plump the Dogs: Submerge the scored hot dogs into the simmering sauce, covering and cooking for another 5–6 minutes until plump.
  5. Build the Base: Place the hot dogs into their buns and spoon over a layer of the savory tomato sauce. Spread mayonnaise on one inside edge of the bun and warm mashed potatoes on the other.
  6. Top and Serve: Zig-zag ketchup and mustard over the top, press the green peas and crushed Cheez-Its into the mashed potato glue, sprinkle with parmesan, and cut cross-wise to serve.

FAQ

Can I use instant mashed potatoes for this hot dog dinner idea? Absolutely. If you don’t have leftover homemade mashed potatoes on hand, mixing up a quick batch of instant mashed potatoes works perfectly and keeps this dinner incredibly fast.

How do I prevent the toppings from making a huge mess? The secret is in the assembly. Spreading the sticky mayonnaise on one side of the bun and the thick mashed potatoes on the other creates a secure barrier that holds the hot dog and the loose toppings like peas and crackers in place.

My child is picky about visible pieces of pepper and onion. What can I do? If your toddler is highly sensitive to veggie textures, you can run the simmered tomato sauce through a blender or use an immersion blender right before adding the hot dogs to make it completely smooth.

What kind of hot dogs are best to use for toddlers? Look for high-quality, all-beef hot dogs, lower-sodium options, or uncured hot dogs with no added nitrates or nitrites to keep it wholesome for younger kids.

Can I substitute the green peas and Cheez-Its? Yes, this recipe is highly adaptable. You can easily swap the peas for sweet corn niblets and exchange the Cheez-Its for Goldfish crackers, potato chips, or classic french fries depending on what is in your pantry.

Instructions

  1. Dice the onion, pepper, and garlic into small pieces. Score the hot dogs length-wise. If you haven’t already,
  2. Melt the butter in a small pot–but one long enough to allow the hot dogs to sit on the bottom–set to Medium heat. Once bubbling, add in the onion and bell pepper and cook until the onion is soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic pieces and cook for another 30-60 seconds.
  3. Add the tomato sauce, oregano, and a big splash of water to the pot; increase the temperature to Medium High and bring pot to a boil. Once bubbling, cover the pot, reduce heat to Low, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Submerge the hot dogs into the sauce, making sure the sauce gets all into the cut side of the hot dog. Cover the pot again and let the hot dog cook for 5-6 minutes in the sauce until plump.
  5. Remove the dogs from the pot and place directly into hot dog buns. Pour enough of the tomato sauce from the pot to coat the hot dog but not soak the bun.
  6. On one of side of the hot dog and bun, squiggle or spread mayonnaise all down the length of the dog/bun; on the other, spread the mashed potatoes length-wise. This will ensure the hot dog and all its components stick to the bun.
  7. Zig-zag ketchup and mustard over the top of the hot dogs, then stud the top with your peas and fries/crunchy element. Grate or sprinkle parmesan cheese over the top.

Serve

  1. Definitely cut the hot dog in half cross-wise to make it easier for your child to hold. And may we suggest taking your excess peas, fries, and/or mashed potatoes as your (easy) sides to the hot dog?

Adapt

  1. Substitutions based on your child’s preferences are easy on this one–it is just a crazy hot dog, after all. Swap the peas for corn niblets; the french fries for Goldfish or Cheezits. We can vouch for adding a strip of bacon to one side of the bun; we’ve also heard that in some parts of Brazil shredded chicken is used instead of hot dogs.
